Hi! My name is Laurel Biever. I have been a licensed counselor in Ohio since 1999, after receiving my Masters in Education in 1996 from the University of Dayton in Ohio. I was raised in Columbus, Ohio—Go Bucks—but went to George Mason University for my undergraduate work in Psychology and shortly thereafter moved back to Columbus to work and get my Masters in counseling. I have worked with adults and adolescents in my career, starting with providing care for individuals in treatment for chronic pain at the Ohio State Chronic Pain Clinic. I attended the Gestalt Institute of Central Ohio for 7 years, and worked in a Gestalt private practice seeing adults for individual counseling as well as parent training. I then began working at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in the behavioral health program in Columbus were I ultimately was a pioneer team member in the Center for Suicide Prevention and Research program, educating the community about suicide prevention and collaborating with schools to implement and establish suicide prevention programs for youth.
I use a combination of approaches when working with clients and focus on a Person-Centered approach. I have extensive training in working with clients that struggle with suicidality. I have an eclectic style centered on making a connection with the client finding what works best for each. I use mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy, DBT methods, motivational interviewing and gestalt techniques
Virginia called to me again where I could not only be part of an amazing organization known as Youth for Tomorrow and work with an outstanding team of professionals to provide mental health care, but also be close with my family, who have all one by one moved to the Northern Virginia area over the years. Spending time with my family is what fills me. We love to cook together, eat together, spend time in nature and just hang out together.
